Starting the School Year Off Right: Simple Ways to Support Your Child
A new school year brings so many changes for children. There are new routines, new teachers, new friends, and sometimes even a new school or childcare environment. While this can be exciting, it can also take a little time for children to settle in.
A recent article from Active for Life, 11 Tips for Starting the School Year Off Right, shares some simple reminders that can help families make the transition from summer into the school year a little smoother.
Bring Back a Consistent Routine
Children often feel more comfortable when they know what to expect. Having regular times for waking up, meals, getting ready, play, and bedtime can make busy school days feel more manageable.
It does not have to be perfect. Even small routines, such as preparing backpacks and clothing the night before, can make mornings less rushed.
Make Sleep a Priority
After summer holidays, getting back into an earlier bedtime can sometimes be challenging. Active for Life highlights the importance of sleep and recommends creating a calming bedtime routine.
A bath, bedtime story, quiet conversation, or relaxing activity can help children slow down and prepare their bodies for sleep. Reducing screen time before bed can also help make bedtime easier.
Fuel Their Busy Days
Children spend a lot of energy learning, playing, exploring, and growing. Providing nutritious meals, snacks, and water throughout the day helps give them the energy they need.
Getting children involved can also make healthy eating more enjoyable. Let them help choose a fruit for their lunch, fill their water bottle, or help prepare a simple snack.
Make Time for Movement and Play
One reminder from Active for Life that we especially love is the importance of movement. Children need opportunities to run, jump, climb, dance, explore, and simply have fun.
After a long day of listening and learning, outdoor play can be a wonderful way for children to release some energy. Movement does not always have to mean organized sports. A walk together, playing at the park, kicking a ball outside, or having a dance party at home all count!
Don’t Forget the Quiet Moments
Children need downtime too. Their schedules do not have to be filled with activities every minute of the day.
Quiet play, colouring, looking at books, building with blocks, or simply relaxing gives children an opportunity to slow down and recharge. Finding a balance between activities, movement, family time, and rest can make a big difference.
Talk About Their Day
One of the simplest things we can do is listen.
Instead of only asking, “How was school today?” try asking, “What made you smile today?” or “Who did you play with?” These little conversations can give children an opportunity to share their experiences, including anything they may be worried or excited about.
Give Everyone Time to Adjust
Starting a new school year is an adjustment for the whole family. Some mornings will go smoothly, and others might involve a missing shoe, a forgotten water bottle, or a child who simply doesn’t want to get out of bed!
That’s okay.
With consistency, patience, healthy routines, plenty of play, and lots of encouragement, children will gradually find their rhythm.
Here’s to a school year filled with learning, laughter, friendships, outdoor adventures, and wonderful memories! 🍎📚🌳
