Alberta’s ECE Certification Guide has been updated

The Government of Alberta has released a new Certification Guide for Early Childhood
Educators.

Most of the changes are administrative and are meant to make the guide clearer and easier to
use. However, there are a few important updates ECEs should know about.

What’s new?

Reassessments and reviews: There are changes to the processes for asking for a reassessment
or review of a certification decision.
Conduct requirements: The guide provides more information about the conduct expected of
certified ECEs. It also explains ECEs’ responsibilities to report certain information and meet the
requirements needed to keep their certification.
Terms and conditions on certificates: Terms or conditions may now be added to an ECE’s
certificate when there are serious concerns about following the Early Learning and Child Care
Act that impact the health and safety of children in care. This gives the Certification Office
another way to respond to serious situations, including some situations that do not result in
criminal charges.
Certificate security: The guide also includes information about new security features on ECE
certificates.

What should ECEs do?

Take some time to review the new guide, especially the sections about:
• keeping your certification in good standing;
• conduct requirements;
• what information you need to report; and
• reassessments and requests for review.
The updated guide is intended to help ECEs and employers better understand Alberta’s
certification rules and processes.
